Surplus Exchange Inc., The

The Surplus Exchange operates out of a warehouse in Kansas City, Missouri. They strive to keep electronics and office equipment of landfills, and maximize its usefulness. As E-Stewards, staff or volunteers at their Electronics Recycling Center look over unwanted electronics, to determine whether the item can be refurbished and reused. If an item makes it through the pass/fail test, it is sent to their tech shop for extensive testing to ensure stable functionality before it is offered for sale or donated to a community cause. If an item does not pass, then it is recycled and salvageable parts harvested. All of their downstream is tracked; they maintain a zero landfill policy with zero export to Third-World Countries.
They also offer "Learn and Earn" - a comprehensive "Build a PC" program for disadvantaged youth. In the program, students learn how to build a computer, diagnose problems and make repairs. Surplus Exchange provides all of the new (not used) components and instruction.
